Learning
At Brunel School, our learning approach is grounded in a nurturing, trauma-informed environment where every pupil can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. Central to this is our bespoke curriculum, designed around core concepts such as identity, wellbeing, communication, and inclusion, which prepares pupils for safe and successful adult lives. The curriculum is knowledge-rich and carefully sequenced to build mastery, with a strong emphasis on foundational literacy and numeracy skills. Our embedded Prosper programme provides therapeutic support addressing pupils’ social and emotional barriers, ensuring that learning is accessible and meaningful for all, including those with SEND and SEMH needs. Through this approach, pupils develop resilience, confidence, and practical skills essential for adulthood, supported by a broad range of academic and vocational qualifications tailored to their aspirations.
Our teaching and learning practises reflect evidence-based strategies including adaptive teaching, metacognition, and effective feedback, all delivered within a safe and inclusive setting. Staff receive ongoing professional development to ensure trauma-informed pedagogy is consistently embedded, promoting high expectations and engagement. The curriculum also prioritises safeguarding and wellbeing, linking closely with pastoral care to support attendance and emotional health. Pupils are empowered to understand their role in their local and wider communities, fostering values of integrity, compassion, and responsibility. Through this holistic and dynamic learning model, Brunel School cultivates confident, capable young people ready to navigate the complexities of modern life with resilience and purpose.
'A Day in the Life of Brunel'
In a school where the bell rings, emotions run high, Teachers greet pupils with a warm, caring sigh. With lessons to share and hearts to mend, We navigate challenges, support is our trend.
“Maths is too tricky!” one pupil will cry, But we’ll break it down gently, give it a try. With numbers and shapes, we’ll make it all clear, In a safe, nurturing space, there’s nothing to fear.
In science, we mix potions, a bubbling brew, “Is that safe?” they ask, with a sceptical view. “Just don’t touch the beaker, and all will be fine, We’re here to discover, to learn, and to shine!”
In the art room, creativity flows, “Can I paint my feelings?”—of course, let it show! With colours and canvas, we express and create, Building resilience, it’s never too late.
At lunch, it’s a moment to chat and unwind, Sharing our stories, leaving worries behind. With laughter and kindness, we build up our crew, In this SEMH haven, we know what to do.
The clock ticks away, and the day’s nearly through, “Let’s reflect on our wins, what did you do?” With gratitude circles, we wrap up the day, Tomorrow’s adventures are just on the way.
So here’s to the teachers, the pupils, and the whole team, In this whirlwind of care, we all share a dream! With patience and love, we guide every heart, In our SEMH school, we’re never apart.
