School Uniform Policy
Last reviewed April 2026.
Brunel School is a nurturing and empowering secondary SEMH (Social, Emotional, and Mental Health) school. Our mission is to cultivate an environment where every student can flourish academically, emotionally, and socially, guided by the values of Integrity, Love, Availability, Inclusion, Compassion, Safeguarding, and Aspiration.
The Department for Education strongly encourages schools to have a uniform as it can play a valuable role in contributing to the ethos of a school and setting an appropriate tone.
Brunel School has adopted an inclusive attitude towards school uniform, and we do not expect parents and carers to spend a great deal of money on impractical items of clothing. We want our pupils to feel smart, comfortable and proud to wear our school uniform as it shows a sense of respect and community.
Our school uniform has been chosen following consultation with pupils, parents and carers, staff and Governors.
School Uniform
- Brunel School Logo - Polo shirt
- Brunel School Logo - Jumper
- Dark coloured trousers/shorts/skirts (no denim)
- Comfortable school shoes or trainers
- No leggings
- Underwear must not be visible
- Stomach must not be visible. No crop tops.
- Shorts and skirts need to reach halfway down the thigh
- Wrist watches may be worn – but no Smart watches or devices (no watches allowed during examinations)
Children will be advised on the kit needed for outdoor education and swimming as appropriate.
All items of clothing to be clearly named to ensure that they stay with the right pupil. The school reserves the right to discreetly name any item of clothing that has not been identified. This will normally be done using a permanent black marker on the clothing label. If you do not wish us to do this, then please identify clothing before it arrives in school.
Requirements for school dress are based upon a consideration of health, sensory needs, neatness, cleanliness and suitability for work at school. We strive to create an engaging learning environment based on our school values and we want our pupils to feel part of our school community. For these reasons we expect each parent and carer to take responsibility for supporting their child to dress in accordance with the school dress code. Parents and carers may get a telephone call or letter home if their child is without appropriate uniform.
Physical Education
Pupils are not required to get changed for PE; this is entirely optional, but facilities are available. We advocate this approach due to the fact there are many children and young people on roll who find changing for PE quite stressful (given their additional SEND and/or associated anxieties that may exist).
Appropriate clothing, body piercings and jewellery
To ensure the safety of all participants during physical education (PE) and sports activities, the following guidelines must be followed:
Clothing
• All students and staff are required to wear appropriate sportswear that allows for safe and unrestricted movement.
• Clothing should be made from breathable, flexible fabrics and free from any elements (e.g., zippers, belts, or loose strings) that could pose a risk of injury.
• Proper footwear, such as trainers with non-slip soles, must be worn. Open-toed shoes, sandals, or boots are not permitted.
Jewellery
• Jewellery, including necklaces, bracelets, rings, and dangling earrings, must be removed before participating in PE or sports activities.
• Stud earrings may be permitted at the discretion of staff if they do not pose a safety risk. However, these should be covered with medical tape or similar protection if removal is not possible.
Body Piercings
• Visible body piercings, including facial piercings, must either be removed or securely covered during PE and sports to avoid potential injury to the individual or others.
• Any piercing that cannot be removed (e.g., due to healing or medical reasons) must be discussed with staff to determine an appropriate safety solution.
